When I was in high school, between 1990 and 1994, already
Wolverine, especially Weapon X Wolverine, with his big, all
those cables and crazy headset. If you look up Weapon X
Wolverine, circa 1990, I would draw it. The mask, it was
iconic, but that he was... always angry.

And, uh, always ended up by himself, because he would, uh,
inevitably hurt the people he was around with his, his
behavior. I don't feel like walking through there, just walk back. Doing some maintenance over there. Same thing with the hulk, is that, um, he was, oh, there's
another Caterpillar here.

I'm gonna have to look those up. I think that's a monarch. I'm not sure. But, um,
The Punisher, because he was the absolutist.

Um, again,
this is a 1990 skateboarding kid, and he should, he would
draw this, the, draw the Punisher skull, and draw Wolverine
, um, for my, uh,
Yeah, there was something about, that you just, you just
take a beating, and you just take a beating, and you just
take a beating, and then get up, and then take a beating,
and get up. And the Hulk, and the Hulk, and the Hulk, and the Hulk, and
the Hulk, and the Hulk, and the Hulk, was that he was, you
know, Bruce Banner, dealing with his anger, and this, um,
and that it was actually Bruce Banner, who was more
dangerous than the Hulk, in some ways. even later when a spawn came out that was so edgy I loved
it at age I used to draw spawn real big
spawn pictures that was unfortunately unfortunately
whatever it doesn't matter I'm leaning into the
current um dung uh complaints about Bob Liefeld but he was
I read Cable I read X-Force I read all that
stuff when I came out because you could get it at Sears and
the comic shop that I used to go to when
I was even littler um closed down so I would buy my comics
at Sears um you know get all of the uh dark
not dark horse um uh image comics and um brigade wild cats
something hawk um stuff like that it was all
pretty it wasn't great but uh I I had until my kids
destroyed it I did have the second appearance of
Deadpool uh comics still in my um collection I had a little
teeny tiny collection that I kept for years
in the after high school um when I re-enlisted all of my
belongings were destroyed in a fire
I lost almost everything except a few things that were just
like tucked away in my parents basement
including these comics but um
uh I would I was just don't say obsessed with these
characters but but Rob Liefeld did and Todd McFarlane
um uh and their love of pouches and big weird looking
future heuristic energy weapons uh really
inspired me to the point where from my high school um my
high school uh final art for my I was in art
class and I fancied myself I was going to be an artist but
really all I did was I drew
not very well and I was fixated on drawing certain types of
scenarios certain types of characters
and I didn't have a whole lot of interest in really refined
art um
which would explain why I was so attracted to what I'm like
because come on let's like I'm sorry man
like you made enough money I don't have to feel bad and I
've seen I saw Deadpool Wolverine eight
times and yeah yeah yeah it's before I knew what I know now
about those individuals but it was a very
meaningful um poignant movie for me at the time it's odd to
think about Ryan Reynolds movie as poignant but
it was especially for the time and what I was going through
and just like in high school I was going
through a lot of anger frustration impatience I I was
overwhelmed all the time I didn't trust anybody
I was recovering from a lot of bullying um it was pretty
bad
not just the teachers I mean not just the students but also
the teachers
and my parents weren't helping and my family wasn't really
helping
but so I was carrying a lot of anger that really uh was why
those characters appealed to me so much
because each one of them Hulk his rage is invincible and
the angrier it gets the more powerful they got and
Wolverine same thing the angrier he got and the more you
hurt him the the um more dangerous he became
and and more formidable you didn't want to mess with him
and uh Punisher he was an absolutist
he knew who was good he knew who was bad he was the judge
um it was a very much high school kid
and that's how these stories resonated with me at the time
he said he was like
power um fantasy but the power fantasy wasn't to have power
over other people
i didn't imagine myself as even superman or anything like
that but i do love the new superman and you know
what i also read lobo and i i was i'm aware there was a
parody now but that's kind of what makes it even
funnier i love i freaking love lobo he was not necessary
for the ruin of tomorrow
that was such a cop out by the studios putting him in there
because she didn't need anybody's help
she pulled that off you got to go read the book
well supergirl woman of tomorrow amazing story oh hi i'm
sorry
so i think i pass
amazing story but um
these characters aren't always about when we see power
fantasy we don't always mean
power over somebody else domination it's also resilience
um trying to deal with with a hostile world how to protect
yourself
and the stories that you try to put in your head to say
like okay yeah i'm gonna be like that
and uh yeah it was my high school year uh end of end of
high school and my art teacher was so mad at me
because i did this um because i i kind of rushed it in the
usual adhd fashion but i drew um
the spawn lifel mcfarlane cable more at that time than even
maybe even deadpool uh inspired mickey mouse
so it was mickey mouse uh full full profiles from face on
and he's kind of got his head turned to the
right again this was lost to time but it was the big mickey
's head and then he's got a ripped body
you know absolutely ripped like uh a comic book character
with uh you know straps of like
suspenders with pouches that i don't even know why i just
drew pouches on there i'd try i think
i'd probably try to imagine what was in them but uh and he
's holding up a pistol a futuristic uber
photon whatever energy weapon pistol like cable or one of
them would have had in that era and uh
there's a dystopian uh backdrop that is all buildings
burning and smoking and and uh you know he's just
coming from a battle you know and he's uh he's ripped but
he's like oh you know however uh however mickey
doesn't don't copyrights drug me i'm so accurate but um
when uh deadpool wolverine came out and it was
about disney oh my god i lost my mind i i've always been an
insufferable i called it but
i called it sure enough there it was there's uh there's
deadpool and mickey mouse because you know
that's what you look like that's what you look like it was
deadpool really with mickey mouse's head
and then uh deadpool wolverine comes out suck it fox yeah
it's unfortunate about those two actors but uh i love that
movie still
it's um it is what it is and it is a really hard time to
separate the artist from the art
but um i drew the picture when i did and then the movie
came out and it blew my mind and
i saw it eight times with friends with family by myself um
then i bought the dvd
and then the news starts coming out
anyway yeah hulk
wolverine and the punisher 1990s
just absolute gold and um
the eyes of uh 1990s era mike hall and they would just draw
their symbols i put them on skateboards
so that's why when the police started putting punisher
skulls on everything i knew that they
didn't know because these exact same kind of people that
used to beat me up for liking comic books
and make fun of my drawings in high school
and now they love it so i must say that kind of story for
the next video
all right thanks bye
