AdequateRecord, J2EE Escapes, and Giving 110 Percent with Aaron Patterson
Before the closing keynote at RailsConf 2014 in Chicago, I sat down with Aaron Patterson (@tenderlove) at the UGtastic interview table.
Aaron was slated to give the closing talk, or what he dubbed the “anti-keynote.” When I asked him to give me a preview of the breakdown, he gave an answer that set the tone for the entire conversation:
Aaron: “The first 30% is just going to be jokes and trolling. The second 30% is going to be some bugs and stuff with ActiveRecord internals. And the final 50% is going to be about AdequateRecord. And I know that adds up to 110%, but I always like to give 110%.”
Mike: “It’s 100%, just don’t add it.”
Aaron: “Don’t add.”
Behind the signature humor was one of the most consequential architectural shifts in Rails history: the public unveiling of AdequateRecord.
The Hidden Bottleneck in ActiveRecord
By 2014, ActiveRecord had already adopted prepared statements to avoid database parse overhead. But as application throughput scaled, a subtle bottleneck remained inside the Ruby runtime itself: AST and SQL generation overhead.
Every time an application executed a routine query like User.find(id) or posts.where(active: true), ActiveRecord traversed an Abstract Syntax Tree (Arel), transformed relations, and dynamically stitched SQL strings together before ever passing the query over the socket.
# The query execution wasn't the slow part, building the SQL string over and over was.
User.find(42) # => Traverses Arel AST -> Allocates Strings -> Emits "SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = $1"
Aaron spent years refactoring the deep internal seams of ActiveRecord just to make AST caching possible. With AdequateRecord in Rails 4.2, routine model lookups cached their generated SQL statement templates directly in memory, bypassing AST construction and delivering an instant 2x speedup on common query paths across the entire Rails ecosystem.
The Road from J2EE to Open Source Stewardship
During our conversation, Aaron also shared how he transitioned from enterprise J2EE engineering into Ruby open-source leadership:
- The Perl Roots (2001): Early patches to CPAN libraries (“Don’t Google me, Perl please,” he joked).
