A photo-backed personal archive
Rooms I Was In: A Lived History
I'm Mike Hall, a software developer and community builder. I didn't keep a tidy archive, but I saved these pictures of rooms where we learned together, communities we built, work that shaped my path, and unexpected days I still think about. This is part of the story I can tell through the photos I took.

How to read the dates, sources, and photographs
These entries combine my recollections, photographs, and public records. A source note explains the basis of a claim; it does not mean every detail has independent confirmation.
A photograph's capture date, an event date, and a later publication date can differ. Approximate and unknown dates stay labeled. Their place in this reading order does not establish a precise date.
Gallery captions currently describe the event as a whole. Individual image descriptions and identifications are still being developed. Open a photograph to view its larger web copy.
The selections are my own history to tell. A person appearing in a photograph is not an endorsement of this site or its projects.
Eagle Scout, proudly
I earned the rank of Eagle Scout. I'm proud of the work it took and still carry that milestone with me. This clipping is one small piece of my early story.
Dates, sources, and context
Date: The newspaper clipping identifies Mike Hall's Eagle Scout achievement; its publication date is not visible in the source photo.
Source: Mike's Google Photos album and recollection.
My father's work and trucks
Location not established
This album holds a few fragments of my father's life: a green Autocar, one of his pride-and-joy trucks, and a black-and-white photograph of him at work at CW. It is a quiet glimpse of the family business and the world around me as I was growing up. I will tell more about the work I did with Lotus 1-2-3 and Approach '97, and my early web pages in FrontPage '97, another time. He also had a black Autocar called Warcloud, named for the artwork on its back; I will add that story when I find the photo. One truck print is marked 1988; the other dates are not established.
Dates, sources, and context
Date: One truck photograph is handwritten '1988'; the black-and-white photograph of my father at work is undated.
Source: Mike's Google Photos album and recollection; the handwritten year appears on the truck print.
Learning Scrum by helping a team practice it
Crystal Lake, Illinois
At TicketsNow I introduced and led Scrum practices with the core transaction engineering team. The notes preserve what I was teaching: keep the product backlog focused on prioritized requirements, draw the sprint backlog from it, and use progress charts to talk about the work. I photographed these pages in 2021, not during the classes, so the teaching dates remain approximate.
Dates, sources, and context
Date: TicketsNow role record; the date of each class is not established by the later note photographs.
Source: Mike's recollection and the public TicketsNow role record.

A July afternoon at Obtiva Geekfest
Obtiva, Chicago
I kept showing up at Geekfest because it made learning visible: people gathered around a problem, shared what they knew, and made room for one another to try things. This set gives the room more space in the story.

I kept a camera with me at community events because the conversations mattered as much as the slides. This set brings another Chicago Alt.NET gathering into the sequence.

Cloud Developers' Group around a table
Duke O'Brien's, Crystal Lake, Illinois
This is the kind of room I wanted to make possible: a few people, laptops open, trading ideas without needing a conference stage. The same five photographs appear in another July 2010 export, so I count this as one meeting rather than two separate events.
Dates, sources, and context
Date: Date in the original photo filenames and album title; the capture EXIF date is absent.
Place: Mike's recollection of the meeting venue.
Source: Mike's Google Photos album; the selected image is one of five repeated in a second export.

Geekfest at Obtiva: a room built for learning together

Geekfest was Obtiva's recurring study group and apprenticeship forum. I joined the room as a practitioner and learned from the people who made time to teach, try ideas, and work through code together. This album also includes Brian Marick's July session at Obtiva.

The first Software Craftsmanship McHenry County meeting
McHenry County, Illinois; exact venue not established by the album
Ryan Gerry and I helped start Software Craftsmanship McHenry County (SCMC) as a place to practice, discuss, and share software craftsmanship close to home. Seeing the name on the board still brings me back to the beginning: a community takes shape when people keep making room for one another.

Clojure Koans at SCMC

Colin Jones led a Clojure Koans session. People learned by working through small exercises together, asking questions as the code made each idea concrete. That format still shapes how I think about a useful technical learning session.

Chicago Code Camp: a shirt people wanted to wear
Chicagoland; the venue is not established by this album
Another person designed the Chicago Code Camp logo. I helped decide which submission to use, adapted the logo for the CCC shirt and sticker design, and integrated it into the website. The shirt became wildly popular. I remember the design work as one small piece of making a free community conference feel like something people belonged to.

Obtiva, Chicago
This was an all-Obtiva gathering to hear that we had been acquired by Groupon and to learn the plan going forward. I took these photos without fully understanding what the news meant. Looking back, I can see this as the end of an era: a roomful of people and a company about to change.

A Ruby presentation and an “I ♥ User-Groups!” sticker

Making a learning room inside a large organization
OneMain Financial · internal community
I started Open Tech Talks and grew it into Geekfest@OMF, carrying forward the weekly peer-learning format I had experienced at Obtiva. Across more than 49 sessions, we worked through Ruby, legacy code, SOLID, Cynefin, early LLMs, and OpenTelemetry. I coached first-time speakers and made space for engineers from different teams to teach one another. I am keeping the workplace photographs private while I review them for colleagues' privacy and internal material.
