UGl.st and Chicago Code Camp: Community Infrastructure Before Centralized Platforms Took Over

Between 2010 and 2014, regional developer communities were exploding. In Chicago and across the Midwest, user groups met weekly in library basements, university auditoriums, and startup offices. There was a dedicated user group for everything: Ruby, Python, JVM, Scala, Agile craftsmanship, mobile development, and DevOps.

Back then, you couldn’t rely on centralized corporate platforms to discover or organize these events. Meetup was clunky and expensive for non-profit community leads, Discord didn’t exist, and Twitter was just a broadcast stream.

If a developer community wanted high-bandwidth coordination, we had to build our own software.

Two projects from that era: Chicago Code Camp (2010–2012) and UGl.st (The User Group List, 2014), taught me that community infrastructure requires thoughtful software architecture, clear incentives, and radical simplicity.


Chicago Code Camp: Scaling Grassroots Conferences on Open Web Rails

Chicago Code Camp was a massive, multi-track, free annual community conference bringing together hundreds of local engineers. As a co-organizer and web lead, I designed and built the event websites, speaker submission workflows, and session scheduling systems.

Running a 500+ person technical event on a zero-dollar software budget forced creative engineering:

  1. Speaker Submission & Blind Voting: To prevent favoritism and ensure high session quality, we built a proposal management system that anonymized speaker identities during initial community voting.
  2. Deterministic Schedule Matrix: Balancing 6 concurrent tracks across 8 time slots without speaker collisions or room capacity overruns was an optimization puzzle. We built an interactive grid scheduler that generated static HTML schedules directly from our database, ensuring mobile performance was instant even on spotty venue Wi-Fi.
  3. Resilient Static Delivery: Instead of hosting complex dynamic applications on fragile servers on conference day, we pre-rendered event schedules, speaker bios, and room directions to static assets. When 500 developers checked their phones between sessions, the site never slowed down.

UGl.st: Building a Decentralized Directory for Grassroots Groups

By 2014, a new challenge emerged. Hundreds of independent user groups were active across the country, but they operated in silos. A developer visiting a new city or looking to pick up functional programming had no simple way to find active, verified local meetups.

That friction led me to build UGl.st (ugl.st: The User-Group List).

UGl.st was designed as a lightweight, open discovery engine for user group organizers:

  • Organizer Self-Service: Group leaders could claim and verify their groups without paying recurring subscription fees.
  • Cross-Community Syndication: It bridged physical conference hallway tracks with local digital discovery, letting conference attendees find meetups in their home zip codes.
  • High-Signal Data Curation: Rather than algorithmic feeds or ad-driven rankings, UGl.st focused strictly on verified location data, cadence, and direct contact details for organizers.

What Was Lost When Tech Centralized

In the years that followed, commercial platforms like Meetup, Eventbrite, and corporate-sponsored developer portals absorbed much of the independent tech scene.

While centralized tools solved payment processing and global marketing, something critical was lost in the transition:

  1. Platform Lock-in & Paywalls: Independent organizers were subjected to steep monthly subscription costs, forcing many long-running grassroots groups to shutter or migrate to private chat servers.
  2. Fragmented Technical Memory: When meetups moved behind walled gardens and chat channels, session recordings, speaker slides, and archived discussions stopped being indexable on the open web.
  3. Loss of Local Serendipity: Algorithmic recommendations prioritized large corporate-sponsored marketing webinars over intimate, local code-pairing sessions.

💡 Why Local Community Infrastructure Matters Again

In 2026, as software engineering navigates remote work and AI-generated code, the need for authentic human connection and local software craftsmanship is stronger than ever.

  1. Static and open tools endure. The custom software we built for Chicago Code Camp and UGl.st ran reliably because it favored open standards, static caching, and low operational overhead.
  2. Community is built in person, supported in code. Software should reduce organizational friction for leaders, not extract rents from volunteer communities.
  3. Preserving community artifacts matters. The relationships, technical insights, and mentorship born in those early user groups laid the foundation for the modern software industry.
